1965-1970
The third generation of computers used integrated circuits which caused computers to be more affordable than the computers in the previous two generations. During this generation, the Digital Equipment Corporation introduced the first commercially successful minicomputer. The computers in this generation could run multiple programs for multiple users at the same time and were smaller, lighter, and more power efficient.
The third generation computers emerged with the development of IC (Integrated Circuits). The invention of the IC was the greatest achievement done in the period of third generation ofcomputers. IC was invented by Robert Noyce and Jack Kilby in 1958-59. IC is a single component containing a number of transistors. Transistors were miniaturized and placed on silicon chips, called semiconductors, which drastically increased the speed and efficiency of computers.
